Arun was a regular client who returned to see Shivani because he enjoyed talking with her.
During one visit, she wore a sky-blue saree. The color reminded her of the blue sky she used to watch from her childhood home, before every day became a struggle over her mother's demands.
Arun noticed that she seemed quieter than usual.
“What are you thinking about?” he asked.
“My old life,” Shivani replied. “Sometimes I wonder whether I would have come here if things had been different.”
Arun listened without pretending he could solve her problems.
They talked about loneliness, family expectations, and the difficulty of knowing whom to trust. Shivani found herself sharing feelings she usually kept hidden.
As the evening drew to a close, Arun asked if he could kiss her.
Shivani paused. She considered the question, looked at him, and realized that she wanted to.
“Yes,” she answered softly.
Their first kiss was gentle and brief. It was followed by a shy smile and a quiet moment in which neither felt the need to speak.
For Shivani, the significance was not that a customer had kissed her. It was that she had been asked, had made her own choice, and had felt comfortable expressing it.
She knew that their relationship had limits. She would not confuse a paid appointment with a promise of love, and Arun had made no such promise.
Still, the memory stayed with her.
For the first time in a long while, Shivani allowed herself to imagine that affection might someday exist in her life outside the boundaries of work.
She did not know when that day would come.
But she no longer believed it was impossible.
