Shivani stood before the mirror and prepared for another evening.
She wore a reddish western dress and carefully applied her makeup. Her long dark hair fell over her shoulders as she adjusted a small earring.
She remembered her first days at Priya Lodge, when she had struggled to speak to strangers and had been afraid to make even the smallest decision without Saroja's approval.
She was still learning, but many things had changed.
She now knew how to explain her expectations, decline unsuitable arrangements, and leave when a situation felt wrong. She had also begun saving part of her income rather than spending everything on immediate necessities.
Most importantly, she had started thinking about a future beyond the next customer.
She wanted a room of her own, reliable access to healthcare, and enough savings to choose her work rather than feeling trapped by circumstances.
Saroja noticed the notebook in which Shivani recorded her expenses.
“You are planning ahead,” she observed.
“I don't want to spend the rest of my life being afraid of what happens tomorrow,” Shivani answered.
Saroja nodded.
That evening, Shivani stepped outside feeling more confident. She knew that confidence could not guarantee safety, and she did not mistake a new appearance for a complete transformation.
Her progress had come from experience, mistakes, and difficult lessons.
As she walked through the city, she realized that the most important change was invisible.
She had begun to believe that her life belonged to her.
