As the weeks passed, Shivani became more familiar with the streets surrounding Priya Lodge.
She began choosing her own outfits for different occasions. On one particular evening, she wore a modern western dress and left her room feeling more confident than before.
That confidence did not protect her from every difficulty.
Some people spoke disrespectfully. Others tried to bargain aggressively or ignored the limits she explained. One prospective client became angry when she declined his proposal.
Shivani walked away and contacted Saroja rather than allowing the situation to escalate.
Later, Saroja helped her review the evening.
“You cannot control how every person behaves,” she explained. “You can control the precautions you take and whether you remain in a situation that feels unsafe.”
They discussed emergency contacts, keeping money secure, arranging safer accommodation, and seeking help when threatened.
Shivani also began writing down her expenses. She realized that earning money did not automatically create financial security; she needed to protect what she earned.
The long night left her exhausted.
As she removed her earrings, she thought about the people who saw only her appearance and the work she did. They rarely imagined how much planning, worry, and emotional effort went into surviving each day.
Shivani was beginning to understand that her story could not be reduced to a dress, a customer, or a single encounter.
It was a story about a person learning to survive in a city that offered both opportunity and danger.
