Chapter 3 — The Assignment in Devapuram
A confidential investigation brought Sujan to Devapuram, a quiet village surrounded by green fields, old temples, and narrow roads. Several villagers had complained about missing development funds, threats against witnesses, and suspicious activity near the local market.
The village was governed by Sarpanch Lakshmi Devi, a respected woman known for her honesty. She welcomed Sujan at the panchayat office and provided him with the names of people who might help.
Sujan began his investigation immediately. He visited the market, spoke to farmers, examined financial records, and questioned local officials. During the day, he wore his police uniform. In the evenings, he changed into simple shirts and trousers to observe the village without attracting attention.
His appearance changed with every situation. Sometimes he kept his hair neatly tied; sometimes he allowed it to fall around his face after long hours of work.
The villagers gradually began trusting him.
Lakshmi Devi noticed his sincerity. "You work as if this village is your own family," she told him.
Sujan smiled. "Every village deserves someone who listens, Amma."
He had no idea that Devapuram would soon become the place where he would discover both his identity and the family he had never known.
